Hi everyone, welcome to Real Food Live. We are so excited to have you today. We have
0:06
a special surprise. We are here at Cali Love and we are going to feature some of their
0:11
most popular smoothie and bowls here today. So welcome to Cali Love
0:30
My name is Laura DeSantis. I am a holistic nutritionist. How I envision Cali Love is
0:45
not just food, it's a healthy lifestyle. One of our hashtags is good vibes only. We just
0:49
really really love California. We love that environment. We love the lifestyle aspect
0:53
I'm from California so I kind of come for a bit of home. I come to Cali Love because
0:59
I like the vibe. I'm a freelancer so it's a really nice place to work. I'm a vegan so
1:03
for me I'm always looking for a good healthy breakfast. So I think it starts really with
1:09
our poke bowls, our smoothie bowls. I personally love the smoothie bowls the best. It's your
1:13
biggest bang for your buck in terms of nutrition, filling you up for the day, keeping you satiated
1:18
and it's just a healthy alternative to something that you wouldn't necessarily find elsewhere
1:23
I always order the loved bowl. It's acai, strawberries, blueberries, granola. It's really
1:28
good. I gotta say it looks like a work of art. Some honey on top. It looks delicious
1:35
We have fitness classes, yoga classes, meditation. So we're a full stream, Cali Love, of health
1:40
and wellness. You want to wind down after a crazy day of work. You want to have a smoothie
1:44
as well. We help support that with you. It makes you feel really good. I have a lot of
1:49
dietary restrictions so pretty much everything here I can eat, which is really nice. I'm
1:53
ready to go for the day. It's not a heavy breakfast. It's not a bowl of cereal or a
1:57
plate of pancakes. It's everything I need to go to work, hustle, until the next meal
2:02
So it's great. I'm Lisa Manzo, registered holistic nutritionist, fitness professional and owner of Pure Energy
2:16
Wellness Lodge in Etobicoke. I'm your host today for Real Food Live. We have Laura here
2:20
Thank you. I'm Laura DeSanctis. I am the holistic nutritionist here at Cali Love
2:25
And we have Jason. I'm Jason Truna. I'm the corporate chef for Cali Love
2:29
Amazing. So Laura, tell us a little bit about Cali Love. What's this amazing hot spot here
2:33
So we're more than actually just a restaurant. A lot of people come in here. We're known
2:37
for our poke bowls, our smoothies, and our signature salad and grain bowls. But what
2:43
we have here is we embody a healthy lifestyle. So we have fitness classes here, Pilates classes
2:47
yoga, meditation, anything that you can really think of that embodies health and wellness
2:52
That's amazing. So, you know, today people really need more of that in their lives. So
2:57
more of that holistic health and holistic living. So tell me a little bit about what
3:02
poke bowls even are. What are poke bowls? Do you guys know what poke bowls are? Laura
3:06
tell us. Probably Jason's a better one to answer that question. So a poke bowl is essentially a chopped up version of a sushi. So if you like marinated
3:19
sushi rice, raw fish, it's that in a bowl garnished with all sorts of fruits, vegetables
3:26
sauces, garnishes like nori, sesame seeds, and that they essentially make a poke bowl
3:33
That sounds delicious. So I love all of that. That sounds wonderful. What are some of the
3:38
health benefits, Laura, of a poke bowl? Stuff that they have here? Sure. So especially with your fish, you're going to get your great omegas. A lot of people
3:43
take fish oil, but you want to have it from a natural source. So for sure, you're going to have it in your fish. If you're putting it with a grain as well, that's one of the
3:50
great ways you can get protein from it. And then with your veggies, you're going to have lots of antioxidants, natural ways to get antioxidants, your vitamin A, your vitamin
3:57
C, B vitamins. So you'd rather get it from an actual healthy bowl instead of taking it
4:02
from a supplement. Right. Definitely. Why not eat it instead of have to take it through a supplement? It's
4:08
exactly right. So that's amazing. So today we're actually going to feature a popular
4:12
smoothie, right? And then we're also going to be featuring another bowl, although it's
4:16
not the poke bowl, but it is. Is it a salad bowl or a grain bowl
4:20
I would say it's a combination with our quinoa and our kale. So a salad and grain bowl
4:25
Wonderful. So guys, what are we doing first? Are we doing the smoothie? Are we doing the bowl
4:29
We're doing the smoothie first. All right. Let's head over to the blender with Jason. And we're going to start with
4:34
this immortal smoothie. So Laura, tell me a little bit about what's in the smoothie and why the name immortal? I like that name
4:41
Well, I don't know why the name immortal. I can tell you maybe my reason for the name
4:45
immortal. But the benefits of this smoothie is that there's a lot of antifungal, antibacterial
4:51
properties in it. It's great when you want to boost your immune system, especially when
4:55
you're feeling like you're getting sick or a sore throat. Oh, so you know what? This is a perfect time to boost your immune system because we are
5:01
in the season. We're transitioning to fall. I know in Toronto, it doesn't seem that way right now, but we are. And this is a time where we need to boost the immune system because
5:09
we're transitioning right now. So that's wonderful. What in the smoothie would be effective for
5:14
boosting the immune system? So we have here, you're going to want to have ginger for sure, apple cider vinegar, anything
5:20
really green helps with vitamin A, C, manganese, anything that's really going to up your intake
5:25
of vitamins. That's what you're going to need. A lot of antibacterial properties. We have
5:31
in here as well, celery, which is great. It actually creates a boosting agent. It's great
5:35
for your skin. It's super, super hydrating. So anything green like that is really good
5:39
for you. But when it comes to apple cider vinegar, that's really primes the pump for
5:43
your digestive system and helps with actually immunity as well. But the best things in here
5:49
that I love is the ginger and the turmeric. Turmeric, you'll see here that Jason's putting
5:54
in as well. It's got that bright yellow pigment. Smells nice too. It smells amazing
5:58
What's that, Jason? This is coconut water. A little bit of coconut water for electrolytes and hydration. I like that
6:04
So anything definitely with ginger and or turmeric, apple cider vinegar. Those are the
6:09
three ingredients that I love, my go-to's to help with immunity. And like you said
6:13
Lisa, especially when you're feeling like sick or under the weather or cold and flu seasons coming up and you want to combat that. Those are your best ingredients to bang for
6:20
your buck. And you know what's great is I love that there is apple cider vinegar in this smoothie because
6:25
it's so good for digestion. So guys, digestion is huge. I know Laura's really big on this
6:30
as well. All about your gut and really increasing the digestive enzymes to be able to break
6:37
down these amazing healthy foods. So Jason, go and blend. Oh, I thought it was going to be so much louder than this
6:44
We have a silent blender. This is amazing. So take a shot of this over here. So we're
6:49
blending all this in. So let's just go over it really quickly while we're blending
6:53
We have celery, we have turmeric, we have apple cider vinegar, we have a little bit
6:57
of coconut water, we have ginger. I think I can also put kale
7:01
What else do we have in there? Isn't there garlic? So we do a spice of turmeric with crushed ginger and garlic
7:10
So garlic, guys. There's garlic in this smoothie. I bet you can't even taste the garlic
7:15
So maybe that's what Laura was talking about boosting the immune system and antibacterial
7:20
and that would be the properties of garlic, right? Sure, you want to sneak in garlic wherever you can, especially around this time of year
7:27
in the cold and flu season, because it's antibacterial, meaning that it fights bacteria and antifungal
7:32
So, and this is also the time of season of broths and soups. So putting in the garlic
7:38
inside there, crushing it would be a perfect way to get that garlic in as well, or in your smoothie
7:44
Yeah. Looks great, guys. So is this one of your best-selling products, like smoothie
7:51
on the market? Yes, it's one of our top sellers. Really? Yeah, for sure
7:56
Were people a little bit hesitant when they saw that there was garlic in it? No, not really. Most people would go for it as is. Okay
8:05
Actually, let's just tickle it up. Yeah, we don't need another straw. It's amazing. So I'm going to taste this, guys. Get a nice shot. So you could really
8:13
smell the cucumber. I can't really smell the garlic or the turmeric, but I'm excited the
8:18
fact that it's in there and it's going to get in my body. I think what's great about the Immortal, too, is that it's more than just like your kale
8:25
standard kale smoothie, right? It tastes fantastic. I can really taste the celery, which I love. But you know what? I
8:34
can really taste the spices. I can really taste those spices. I really, really like that. So that's wonderful. Really good for the immune system, really going to boost it
8:41
for this time of year. And this is a great, great smoothie
8:45
Yeah, and it's vegan-friendly, gluten-free, dairy-free. And again, it's more than just
8:50
your standard kale smoothie, which I love kale, don't get me wrong. Yes
8:54
But it just gives it that extra kick. Extra kick. And it has the nice flavors that you can really taste. This is definitely a
8:59
smoothie I would have in the morning in this time of year for sure. Anytime
9:04
Wonderful. All right. What's next, guys? We're going to be doing the Passionate Bowl
9:11
Oh, I like that name. So the Passionate Bowl. So I mean, I feel like everything health and
9:17
wellness is all about passion. So tell us a little bit about the Passion Bowl
9:21
So we're going to start in our Passionate Bowl. We have our grain and one of our grains
9:26
is quinoa. And the best thing about quinoa, I don't know if you like quinoa, but you might
9:30
as a nutritionist. Love quinoa. Yeah. It's a great source of plant protein. It's one of the cleanest sources of plant
9:36
protein. So I always like, if I am going to have a grain, I like to live my diet gluten-free
9:40
and that's why I do like quinoa as well. And a lot of people that are conscious of that
9:44
health conscious as well, can have this bowl. As well, you're going to see we have red pepper
9:49
in here, which is great. We have lots of veggies in here, packed with lots of veggies
9:54
We're going to have our greens. So we have arugula. And the one thing I love about arugula
9:58
I'm sure you love it too. Spice? It's the chlorophyll in it, right? That's such a great way to boost your immune system
10:05
Again, we're talking about this time of year, feeling like if you're feeling groggy or you
10:09
feel like the cold's coming onto you, you want to have a lot of greens in your diet
10:13
and arugula is one of the best, I think one of the cleaner types of greens you can get
10:17
Yes, definitely. I agree. And you know what, guys, quinoa is great. It is a complete protein
10:22
especially when paired with a bean or chicken. And I believe chicken and beans are in this bowl
10:27
Chicken and beans are in this bowl as well. Wonderful. So you're getting the complete protein bowl as well with your veggies, your chlorophyll
10:33
and your nutrients. So I'm excited for Jason to make this. He's a chef, everyone
10:42
This is great. So these are the ingredients that we're going to be placing in here, right? A little bit of sweet onion against the red peppers that you guys talked about
10:50
Wonderful. So sweet onion, red pepper, arugula. Black beans. That's the chicken. And what's the chicken seasoned with? I see that it has..
10:58
It has a little bit of garlic, smoked paprika and cayenne. So boosting the metabolism a little with a little bit of the spice. I like that
11:06
Also, as it gets colder, we want to add spice to our food because they're warming
11:11
So warming for our bodies. So I like that. Even the sweet onion, too. Again, it's antibacterial. So you're always going to want to have that
11:19
as much as you can around this time of year. What is it, Laura
11:24
This is the cashew dressing. Oh, I like that. So cashew dressing
11:30
So dairy free. It's just cashew. Basically, we made a cashew cream. Seasoned it with lime juice and chocolate
11:38
Wonderful. So guys, when we say cashew cream, we're not talking about cream
11:43
Like we said, it's dairy free. When cashews are soaked and then blended
11:47
they become creamy, which is so good. And Laura talked a little bit about healthy fats
11:53
We talk a lot about healthy fats here on Real Food Live. And we talk about how important it is to add fats to our diet because it keeps us fuller for longer
12:02
This bowl seems to be all about not only healthy fats, but the protein, which keeps us fuller for longer as well
12:08
Two great protein sources. You have your beans in there and then you have your chicken. Wonderful. That looks great
12:13
That looks great. So imagine you're at work, you're hungry, it's lunch break, you haven't packed anything for lunch
12:20
or you're just not digging the lunch that you did pack or the leftovers you packed. You can come on by to Kali Love, grab one of these Power Bowls
12:28
And I'm just going to show you this here. Grab one of these Power Bowls. You will be full until dinner
12:33
There's no need to run to a vending machine to grab any of those unhealthy snacks
12:38
because you're satiated right here, right? Yeah. This is one of the biggest things for your book, for sure
12:43
Have it for lunch, have it for breakfast if you want, for the next day, have it for dinner
12:48
Yeah. I love it. Again, it's clean, it's healthy, it's your complete protein sources
12:53
You got your greens in there, really good healthy veggies. You can't go wrong. Yeah. This looks great
12:58
So guys, really here, we're really trying to hit home on the healthy eating
13:03
And places like this, like Kali Love, that are here to promote healthy living
13:07
and to provide us with amazing dishes like this. And Laura being one of their nutritionists and helping them out on that front as well is so important
13:16
It just means we'll have a healthier, happier life. And when we eat really healthy food, we exuberate that happiness
13:23
And so this is kind of the place you want to go. So I need a fork. I need a fork because I'm just smelling it
13:29
Oh, thanks Jason. Want to dig in? Sure. Alright. Laura's eaten this I'm sure plenty of times
13:35
It smells so good too. You can really smell the chipotle cashew cream
13:40
So what made you guys think about putting chipotle in it? It's Tex-Mex inspired salad
13:46
Okay. Oh, yes. Chicken, beans, avocado. Wow. Wow. So you can really taste the chipotle and that spice
13:59
And even the chicken with a little bit of cayenne. It gives a little kick to it
14:03
You can totally tell that this has got that Mexican spicy inspired foods
14:10
But it sure beats the taco, doesn't it? It totally beats the taco. I totally agree with you. And so much healthier. So this is wonderful, guys
14:17
So this would be one of your more popular signature bowls. It's our top selling salad
14:22
It's your top selling salad and rightfully so. It's fantastic. It's good. Jason, you did great today. Thank you
